What I love: things that smell amazing, things that make my life easier, and things that basically transform me into a Victoria's Secret model. (Also my family and friends—hi!). Which brings me to coconut oil, a fave of V.S. models and moi that makes you smell like the beach and has a thousand uses. But this one I hadn't tried before.
Turns out, coconut oil isn't just an excellent body moisturizer and defrizzer; it's also a really good makeup remover. And I don't just mean that it'll get the job done when you run out of regular makeup remover. Even as a coconut-oil fan, I was surprised by how quickly it took off eye makeup and by how easily it worked (no rubbing or tugging at delicate undereye skin)—and that goes for waterproof mascara, too.
Here's why: "Coconut oil solubilizes or breaks up water-resistant substances used in eye shadow and mascara, releasing them from the skin and lashes," says cosmetic chemist Joseph Cincotta. And unlike a lot of traditional eye-makeup removers, it'll even leave your skin softer and younger-looking: "It's great for your skin, because it moisturizes and smooths," says Cincotta. Since coconut oil is solid at room temperature, scoop out a little and rub it between your fingers to warm it up first. Smooth that over your skin with your fingers, then wipe it off with a dry cotton ball and it'll take your makeup with it. (Just be careful to "avoid getting oil in your eyes, since it will temporarily blur your vision," says Cincotta.) Repeat until all of your makeup is gone—and then maybe one or two more times, because man, that vacation smell is good stuff.
